Patrol Light
Fountain Pen Drawing. 2014.05.01.

Patrol charts are placed in the ward aisles for those on duty to sign off every 10-20 minutes. The fluorescent lamp on the ceiling is the only source of light.

When I was a trainee in the Taiyuan Training Institute in 2001, the new chief forbade us to switch on fluorescent light for the sake of energy conservation. Instead, fastened to every patrol chart was a battery-powered miniature bulb. We squinted our eyes signing our names.

Our chief in Yilan is much more generous with the provision of 5 Watt fluorescent tubes.

“Why don’t you turn on the light, Wenwei, now we have them?”
“The brightness stings my eyes. After each patrol, I will have to shut my eyes for seconds before I can see clearly into the wards!”

Not the first time for a gap to appear between the well-intended ideas from the top and the needs on the bottom!
