Filling Boiled Water
Fountain Pen Drawing  2014.01.10.

Nothing is more desireable than a warm cup of something in cold weather. All it should take, from boiling water to an electric kettle, is pushing a button! But one can’t always do as he likes, especially in prisons. You don’t find the similar conveniences in a prison. It’s not an option to place an electric kettle in a cell.

Kitchen laborers push carts loaded with heat-preserving barrels along every work yard and ward-dorms. Whoever needs it brings their own thermal bottles for filling. Imagine the whole process from the boilers in the kitchen to the individual bottles takes more than an hour and how warm the water is going to be at the end.

The laborer who is filling various bottles is in charge of the segregation wards. He spends more than ten minutes from filling to delivering. This is likely the only “benefit” for the rule-breaking inmates that others don’t get to enjoy.
