The public’s fears and stereotypes surrounding AIDS and HIV means that, for carriers, discrimination is a fact of life. These conditions are no different in the closed environment of prison. Furthermore, however hard one tries to educate health center staff, and inmates on the realities of AIDS it is incredibly difficult to change people’s perceptions.
When on duty in H-wing at this time, inmates were getting along well. I found this place to be one full of warmth, and during the New Year’s celebrations we made paper cranes and small sky lanterns. People wrote down their hopes and wishes for the year to come. Some stated their desire for early parole, while many others wished their fellow inmates ‘good health’
